Being a senior class advisor is a lot of work but also very rewarding. I was a senior class advisor for the class of 2016 and for the class of 2017 I was co-senior advisor. The class of 2017 was very determined and motivated to make something happen their senior year. Throughout the year we really got the know the 8 seniors well and we worked hard with many ups and downs to raise money for a senior trip and graduation. We raised over $16,000. We used about $2,000 for graduation decorations and food for a banquet for the graduating seniors and their parents. Through working for this money we really developed a sound, broad-based understanding of learners’ families and the local community. We invited parents in to have them share their ideas and we even got a few to help us out for a couple of the events. They shared their knowledge of the community and local ways of knowing which led us to helping out with a fiddle dance for the community. The proceeds both benefited the class of 2017 and the local search and rescue. This partnership helped us bond with the community and really helped bring out the best in everyone involved. It even helped many parents to see the school in new way. It helped them to recognize the school as an integral part of the community.
To make sure everyone knew about events going on in the community we used Facebook and VHF radio. Through Facebook there is a local page called Island Updates/Bargains that most people check frequently. A few example posts are included below. Through this page we were able to model and promote diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness by using digital-age communication and collaboration tools to interact with others.
